hello friends welcome to the second part of the complete series on photoemission spectroscopy in the previous video we have seen the basic principles and instrumentation of xps if you have missed that video you can find the link for the first video in description box now lets talk about the spectra obtained from the xps instrument we have seen that the instrument gives a plot of kinetic energy versus the number of electrons counted so number of electrons counted is plotted in y-axis and kinetic energy is plotted in x-axis so now you can see that it starts from the lower kinetic energy in the left and goes to higher kinetic energy in right as normally a graph is plotted but in most of the modern instruments kinetic energy is converted to binding energy with the formula h nu is equals to binding energy plus kinetic energy plus phi therefore the lower kinetic energy becomes higher binding energy and higher kinetic energy becomes lower binding energy this means now x-axis starts from high

Atoms of a higher positive oxidation state exhibit a higher binding energy due to the extra coulombic interaction between the photo-emitted electron and the ion core. This ability to discriminate between different oxidation states and chemical environments is one of the major strengths of the XPS technique.
Charging Effects in X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy When X-ray photons strike a surface, they cause the emission of electrons. This, of course, is the basis of the XPS technique. If the surface is electrically insulating, then the emission of electrons causes a positive charge to accumulate at the surface.
XPS spectra are, for the most part, quantified in terms of peak intensities and peak positions. The peak intensities measure how much of a material is at the surface, while the peak positions indicate the elemental and chemical composition.
The intensity depends on the X-ray emission, charge neutralization, resolution, sample itself and many other parameters. So it may happen that withn the same sample and using same setting you would get a different peak intensity if you measure them on different date/time.
The XPS spectrum contains peaks at 285.03 eV attributed to the binding energy of C1s, 103.29 eV to the binding energy of Si2p, 83.98 and 87.7 eV to the binding energy of Au4f7/2 and Au4f5/2, respectively, and 532.68 eV to the binding energy of O1s.
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a surface analytical technique, which is based upon the photoelectric effect. Each atom in the surface has core electron with the characteristic binding energy that is conceptually, not strictly, equal to the ionization energy of that electron.
The main cause of the peak shift in XPS spectra is mostly related to chemical shifts due to the presence or absence of the chemical states of the element having different formal oxidation state. And the intensity may also be changed bcos it is directly linked to the number of atoms in the respective chemical state.
The greater the binding energy, the greater the attraction of that electron to the nucleus. i.e. peaks from electrons in 1s will have a greater energy than peaks representing electrons from 2s. Electrons in 2s will have greater energy than those in 2p.
