What are the different types of abnormal results? Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) Atypical squamous cells, cannot exclude HSIL (ASC-H) Atypical glandular cells (AGC)
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
Obscuring factors (blood, inflammation) A specimen is considered partially obscured when 50 to 75 percent of the epithelial cells cannot be visualized [2]; a partially obscured specimen can still be satisfactory for evaluation.
Atypical squamous cells can be a sign of: HPV (human papillomavirus) infection. Benign (noncancerous) cellular changes. Cervical cysts or polyps.
An abnormal Pap test result rarely means cancer is present, especially in someone who has regular, annual Pap tests. An abnormal result means there are cells in the cervix that look unusual, which can be caused by yeast or bacterial infection, irritation, benign growths, hormonal changes, or pre-cancer.
Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal pap smear diagnosis. [12] This diagnosis usually correlates with an HPV infection. This diagnosis can reflect precancerous changes in the cells but can also be caused by inflammation or as a response to trauma (see Image.
The irregular cells identified by Pap test results are classified as low grade or high grade. Low grade changes mean there are mild changes to the cells, and high grade changes indicate moderate to severe changes. These results help your doctor determine if further testing is needed.
High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL): There are moderately or severely abnormal cervical cells that could become cancer in the future if not treated. Your health care provider will likely ask you to come back for a colposcopy.
