To break it down simply an LED shines a beam of light onto a specially coated, slightly angled piece of glass. That glass reflects the light from an LED onto it, creating your reticle. This allows you to see your reticle and see through your optic, but someone on the other side of the optic cannot see your reticle.
Most shooters find they can shoot more accurately with a red dot than with iron sights, particularly at distance and when speed is an issue. With the dot, you can easily holdover for longer shots, while still seeing the entire target in the window.
When shooting the red dot you are suppose to have both your eyes open, its called the Bindon Aiming Concept. It allows for faster target aquisition and wider field of view. You can also use both eyes open when using the magnifier and it will work just the same.
A standard design uses a red light-emitting diode (LED) at the focus of collimating optics, which generates a dot-style illuminated reticle that stays in alignment with the firearm the sight is attached to, regardless of eye position (nearly parallax free).
We call sight in a red dot Zero. After getting a new optic, properly zeroing your red dot should be the first thing a shooter does. Your zero will dictate when the trajectory of your round perfectly coincides with where you are aiming. This is referred to as your Point of Impact or POI.
A red dot is composed of a tilted spherical mirror that reflects the red LED. This mirror has a specific coating that only allows red light to pass throughhence the name red dot sight. This allows you to easily see where you are aiming against darker backgrounds, or in the woods where its green.
Red dots have no magnification, providing an aim point overlay. Precision vs Speed - At high zoom, scopes excel for pinpoint accuracy at long range. Red dots lack magnification but acquire close targets lightning fast. Reticles - Scopes use complex reticles like BDC for holdovers and wind correction.
