In Photoshop, choose Edit Color Settings. You can now enter your dot gain values obtained from your printing company. Typically, newspapers tend to be about 35%, magazines 25% and higher end glossy products are 22%. This number from your printer is usually taken from the 50% screen.
Profile? You can update your Bio fields by entering your new information and clicking the Save button. To edit your links, press the pencil icon, update the info/link, and press Save. You can also select +Add Content to include more links on your dot.
Dot gain is the % that a tone has grown. For example, if a halftone patch of 50% measures 62% then the dot gain is 12%. If a halftone patch of 20% measures 24% then the dot gain is 4%. Dot gain and TVI (tone value increase) mean the same thing.
Halftone is the reprographic technique that simulates continuous-tone imagery through the use of dots, varying either in size or in spacing, thus generating a gradient-like effect. Halftone can also be used to refer specifically to the image that is produced by this process.
Reduce Printing Pressure One of the most common causes of dot gain is too much pressure being applied to the substrate during the printing process. Flexographic printing is a pressure sensitive process and excess pressure (or too little) can adversely affect your final print quality.
What is dot gain? Dot gain is a measure of the difference between the actual ink dot size of the printed piece and the ink dot size specified by the source file. It refers to ink dots appearing larger on the printed piece due to either a mechanical or optical effect. Dot gain is not good or bad.
Halftone dots are referred to by a number based on the number of dots per linear inch. This number is called the frequency or Lines-per-inch LPI. Yes, lines-per-inch doesnt seem right but in the old camera days you would refer to the halftone screen ruling and this is where it came from.
Dot gain is calculated using the density (or reflectance derived from Lab) of the 100% patch and that of the specific given tone patch youre measuring, which must be known or assumed to be a specific dot percent. Dot area is the total of the given dot percentage and the dot gain value (50% + 20% gain = 70%.
