hi and welcome to this excel tip here Im going to show you a very quick and easy way that you can make your columns numbers instead of letters and its really when you change it called the r1c one reference style but you may be asking why would I ever want to do that that is really confusing well if youre working a lot in macros or you need to make cell references that are in numbers not letters right ABC then youre going to want your columns to be numbers thats going to make writing your code and writing formulas a lot easier if you can easily see what they are so to change columns from letters to numbers go to the office button Excel options then go to the formulas tab right here youre going to see our one c1 reference style check that click OK and then you have columns as numbers so it can really help you out one thing to note though is that when you do your formulas now those will be an R 1 C 1 style so C R minus 2 C minus 2 all that really means is back to 1 to up to 1/2 so

If the default formatting doesnt work for your layout, open the Columns dialog box to make adjustments. On the Page Layout or Layout tab, click Columns. In the Columns dialog box, adjust the settings under Width and spacing to choose your column width and the spacing between columns.
Using COLUMN() Remove the cell reference from the COLUMN() function and you will get the letter of the current column. Result: Remember though, this will only work for columns A to Z and, in some cases this might not work depending on the localized settings of the computer.
