In computer science a log file is a textual data file that stores events, processes, messages, and other data from applications, operating systems, or devices.
How to Use Notepad to Create a Log File Select Start, enter Notepad, and select it from the results. Type . LOG on the first line, and then press ENTER to move to the next line. On the File menu, click Save As, type a descriptive name for your file in the File name box, and then click OK.
Log files come in structured, semi-structured, or unstructured formats.
In computing, logging is the act of keeping a log of events that occur in a computer system, such as problems, errors or just information on current operations. These events may occur in the operating system or in other software. A message or log entry is recorded for each such event.
A logger works in the lumber industry, cutting down trees and loading them for transportation. Typical job duties involve cutting, skidding, and pre-processing the logs. The logs are then processed into boards, paper, and other valuable materials. Most loggers work in teams of two to safely fell timber.
Logging is essential to understand the behaviour of the application and to debug unexpected issues or for simply tracking events. In the production environment, we cant debug issues without proper log files as they become the only source of information to debug some intermittent or unexpected errors.
What is logging? The purpose of logging is to track error reporting and related data in a centralized way. Logging should be used in big applications and it can be put to use in smaller apps, especially if they provide a crucial function.
Why is logging important? Log files (also known as machine data) are important data points for security and surveillance, providing a full history of events over time. Beyond operating systems, log files are found in applications, web browsers, hardware, and even email.
Logging is the process of providing information about an application as it performs different tasks or events. Logging offers benefits such as: Issue Diagnosis: Lets say a bug was reported by a user and you want to replicate that scenario in your development environment.
Useful logs can provide the developer ( especially when someone has to debug/maintain someone elses code ) with tremendous help when trying to understand what the code actually does. Some developers say that stack trace is all someone should ever need but, that could not be further from the truth.
