Existing MOBI and AZW files in a Kindle Library are converted to the KF8 (. azw3) format, but adding new MOBI and AZW ebooks is no longer supported by Send to Kindle. Whereas EPUB files can now be added to a Kindle Library, and like pre-existing MOBI and AZW files, they are automatically converted to KF8 files.
You cannot create and edit MOBI files any more. Before the MOBI format was discontinued, authors were able to create and edit MOBI files in various eBook software like Calibre and Kindle Create. Today, if you want to edit an eBook that has been created in the MOBI format, you will first need to convert it.
MOBI is an older file format and does not support the latest Kindle features for documents. If you wish to enjoy our most up-to-date document features, please re-send files in a compatible format. EPUB (. epub) is one such compatible format, and you can send it to your library through Send to Kindle for Email.
As of August 2022, Amazon is discontinuing the ability to send MOBI files to Kindle via the Amazon Kindle Personal Documents Service that is used by Send to Kindle. To learn more, see these articles:
You can either drag and drop your MOBI files or simply click inside the white area. Afterward, click the Compress button, and our online compression app will quickly process the uploaded files.

The MOBI format is the old name for Amazons proprietary ebook file format. Today, its called AZW3. Kindle readers and apps read AZW3 files, as well as the earlier AZW format and even older MOBI files. They dont read epub files. So, why did I say that epub is the right choice for an ebook file?
Yes, the MOBI format is dead. After 2022, Amazon not only recommends you use the EPUB format instead, but officially will not allow you to upload MOBI to KDP or sideload MOBI onto your Kindle devices.
