That means using 1-inch page margins, 12-point font size double-spaced (or 1.5 spaced), and a standard font like Times New Roman in classic (default) black. Dont get creative with fonts or colors here. You want the content of your essay to be what stands out, rather than your unorthodox formatting.
If there are no guidelines, you might use Times New Roman, font size 12, and 1.5 line spacing. Be concise: Ensure that you include information thats relevant to your application. Focusing on relevant talking points can ensure that you make your skills and qualifications clear.
Body of Essay: The body of your essay should be 2-3 paragraphs and is the main part of your essay. This is where you tell about you, your story, your life, accomplishments and plans for the future, and the reason you need the scholarship funds.
Some techniques to try while editing include: Reading your paper backwards. This divorces the statement from its meaning and allows the reader to focus on technical issues. Reading each sentence alone. Ignore the overarching plot or the argument and focus on the mechanics of each sentence. Reading your statement aloud.
Dont use words like finally, in sum or in conclusion. Dont repeat or sum up in any way. Dont start too many sentences with the word I. Dont tell the reader explicitly, I am a unique and interesting person. Instead, let the reader glean this from your unique and interesting essay.
Unless specified otherwise, scholarship essays should always use the following formatting: Double spaced. Times New Roman font. 12 point font.
Make your intro short and sweet. Dont simply restate the question or say how youll be answering it. Get right into it. Whatever the overall tone of your writing whether scholarly, casual or something else you can engage the reader with either a pertinent story or a personal anecdote.
Scholarship Application Essay Tips Plan ahead. Dont procrastinate! Talk about your accomplishments. Be clear and to the point. State your need. What is your financial situation? Keep it simple. Dont use unnecessary words (i.e., dont use three words when one will do) Make it easy on your reader.
