AFP (Advanced Function Presentation) format is part of IBMs document imaging system. It is a raster format, created to add enhanced formatting and indexing capabilities to documents for print applications in finance, retail, insurance and other industries.
Advanced Function Presentation (AFP) applications can generate Advanced Function Printing data stream (AFPDS), line, or mixed (AFPDS and line) spooled files. These applications can run on IBM i or on other platforms. IBM i can receive spooled files from other operating systems.
Whats the difference between AFP and PDF? While PDF has its origins in the graphic arts and ubiquitous desktop viewing, the emphasis for AFP is very high speed variable data printing.
AFP is a network file control protocol system specifically designed for Mac-based platforms. AFP is common for faster networks where large files need to be transferred the norm in graphics/print/video environments where Macs are commonly used.
