Hi, I m Kate physical therapist and today let me show you how to calculate corrected age of a preterm baby. If you gave a birth to a premature baby you must have heard that your babys age will be counted slightly different. Why? Because if your baby was born prematurely, we simply cannot expect him or her to do what a full-term baby would. This is especially important for me as a physical therapist when I am assessing the development of such a baby. When determining reflexes, general movements or milestones, I need to know if a baby was born prematurely, because I need to give him or her more time to achieve certain goals. Lets get to the example. There are a few terms you need to know. First is the chronological age (or actual age). This is the period from premature birth to the present day, or in other words, the period that a child is in the world from the day of his early birth until today. Lets say today is the tenth of July and you gave a birth to

Begin with your babys actual age in weeks (number of weeks since the date of birth) and then subtract the number of weeks your baby was preterm. This is your babys corrected age. (A pregnancy is now considered full term at 39 weeks.)
At what chronological age does age correction stop? Once a child docHubes 24 months chronological age, do not correct for prematurity. This is in alignment with recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Babies born at 3237 weeks are plotted in the preterm chart until 2 weeks after their estimated due date. After that, they are plotted in the main charts using their corrected age, which is measured from your due date rather than their birth date.
When plotting a babys growth, it is recommended to use corrected age through 2 years from the original due date. Some experts recommend correcting through 3 years. If age is not corrected, the infant may appear to be growing suboptimally.
There isnt a set age when you should stop correcting a childs age for prematurity. But most health professionals recommend correcting at least until your child is 2 years old.
To find the corrected age for your baby, simply take the actual age and subtract the weeks preterm. In the above example, if your baby is actually 13 weeks old, but was born 9 weeks early, their corrected age is 4 weeks or about 1 month.
Babies born at 3237 weeks are plotted in the preterm chart until 2 weeks after their estimated due date. After that, they are plotted in the main charts using their corrected age, which is measured from your due date rather than their birth date.
Remember that if your baby was premature, you need to correct her age week for week. If she was born at 36 weeks gestation, she will not smile until about 12 weeks of age rather than 8 weeks.
