you may not know this about me but the degree that i graduated in is in communication studies so knowing this i get asked to write a lot of letters of recommendations from friends family members and colleagues i figured that the chances are pretty good that youll be asked to write one one day if you havent already so i thought id share what ive learned about writing a good letter of recommendation now theres two really good benefits to knowing how to write one of these the first one is you wont have to stress about writing it because it can be very stressful and two youre giving your subject who youre writing the letter for the best possible chance so that they get the job or the admission or whatever youre writing the letter for theres a lot writing on your shoulders when you write a letter like this so hopefully i can show you how to make it as best as it can possibly be im actually going to show you two examples of real letters of recommendations that ive written for peo

Letter of recommendation format A personal story that elaborates on one to two traits the applicant possesses. A closing statement that summarizes why the individual youre recommending would be a good fit for the opportunity. A signature that includes your name and contact information.
Recommendation dos Keep it concise. Summarize in one sentence how you know the student, identify their strengths, and provide 1-2 examples or stories. Use concrete examples, not generalizations. Tell stories that illustrate the students character.
Avoid beginning your letter with To Whom It May Concern. Address your letter to a real person. If you cannot find that persons name, send a professional recommendation to the Hiring Manager and an academic recommendation to the Admissions Committee or Program Director. Also avoid listing all your credentials.
If the applicant has submitted their final application, the school has already received the recommendation and changes cannot be made.

Strike a balance in your letter of recommendation You may be concerned about writing something that seems negative, but as long as you present your views in a positive way, highlighting an area where the candidate needs to improve, your comment should not be detrimental.
Letters should be complete but concise, and they usually consist of three parts: introduction and background, specific assessments, and summary of recommendation. Letters from primary mentors, supervisors or close collaborators are generally somewhat longer than letters from others.
Make Sure the Recommendation Will Be Strong Whomever you choose to write your letter, make sure they feel they can write you a strong and accurate recommendation. If the person isnt sure and cant give actual specifics about your performance as a student, then consider asking someone else.
