The quickest way to add block quotes to a Microsoft Word document is to use the Paragraph settings that are visible in the Layout tab on the ribbon bar. To add a block quote using this menu, open your Word document and select your quote text.
On the menu on the left choose Proofing. Under AutoCorrect options menu, click on the AutoCorrect Options button. Click on the AutoFormat As You Type tab. Under the Replace as you type menu, make sure the Straight quotes with smart quotes box is ticked.
Press-and-hold the ALT key and then type 0147 for the opening single quotation mark and ALT followed by 0148 for the closing single quotation mark.
Mac Users. In Words Preferences, click AutoCorrect and then open the AutoFormat As You Type tab to find the straight/curly quotes option. If the checkbox is left blank, quotes will be straight. At the bottom of the middle set on the AutoFormat As You Type, look for the Straight quotes with smart quotes option.
This probably happens because Word uses language settings for a language that uses chevrons (double angle quotation marks) as quotation marks, such as French.
Enabling Smart Quotes On the menu on the left choose Proofing. Under AutoCorrect options menu, click on the AutoCorrect Options button. Click on the AutoFormat As You Type tab. Under the Replace as you type menu, make sure the Straight quotes with smart quotes box is ticked.
Words can be added or changed to a quote by using brackets. Changes can be used to correct tense or to add necessary information. Brackets can also be used to make the pronouns in a quote consistent. However, brackets should not be used to change the meaning of the quote.
Smart quotes in Word On the File tab, click Options. Click Proofing, and then click AutoCorrect Options. In the AutoCorrect dialog box, do the following: Click the AutoFormat As You Type tab, and under Replace as you type, select or clear the Straight quotes with smart quotes check box. Click OK.
