hi my name is Jen --this unit from QA training this is part of a series of videos on how to use Excel more efficiently this particular video relates to the trace precedence tool a tool that you can use to determine where a formula is getting its values from lets open an Excel spreadsheet so I can demonstrate how the trace precedents tool works now its important to note you can trace the precedence of a cell with a formula in it for example in my current spreadsheet there should be a formula in cell D 15 that calculates the total of quarter 1 and if I want to determine if the formula in D 15 is actually referring to the correct range I can trace its precedents and I can do this by visiting my ribbon finding the formulas tab in the ribbon selecting the formula auditing group and then looking for the trace precedents tool as I click on trace precedents Excel will highlight all those cells that the formula in D 15 is referring to and in this example the formula in D 15 is referring to a

A precedent is a cell that provides data to a formula. A dependent is a cell that contains a formula that refers to other cells. To learn more about Excel features related to relationships between cells, see Display the relationships between formulas and cells. A precedent cell may have its own precedent cells.
Precedent cells cells that are referred to by a formula in another cell. For example, if cell D10 contains the formula =B5, then cell B5 is a precedent to cell D10. Dependent cells these cells contain formulas that refer to other cells.
Trace formulas that reference a particular cell (dependents) Select the cell for which you want to identify the dependent cells. To display a tracer arrow to each cell that is dependent on the active cell, on the Formulas tab, in the Formula Auditing group, click Trace Dependents .
In Excel, trace precedents and trace dependents are used to locate the cells that contain the formula. Trace Precedents indicates the cells that affect the active cells value and Trace Dependents indicates the cells affected by the active cell. You can identify trace precedents and trace dependents by tracer arrows.
Find Formulas, Functions and Cells Connected to a Cell Open your workbook to a sheet that contains cells with precedents or dependents. Select the cell in which you want to check precedents and/or dependents. Click the Trace Precedents or Trace Dependents button in the Formula Auditing group of the Formulas tab.
On the Formulas tab, click Remove All Arrows in Formula Auditing group, and then click Remove Precedent Arrows.
In Excel, trace precedents and trace dependents are used to locate the cells that contain the formula. Trace Precedents indicates the cells that affect the active cells value and Trace Dependents indicates the cells affected by the active cell.
Go to Formulas tab Formulas Auditing Trace Dependents. Click on the Trace Dependents button to see the cells that are affected by the active cell. It will show a blue arrow that links the active cell and the other cells related to the selected cell.
Precedent cells are cells that are included in the calculation of a selected cell. For example, if cell B3 contains the formula =B1+B2, cells B1 and B2 are precedents of B3. You can use Trace Precedents commands to graphically display and trace the relationships between cells and formulas with tracer arrows.
