About In-Text Citation In-text citations include the last name of the author followed by a page number enclosed in parentheses. Heres a direct quote (Smith 8). If the authors name is not given, then use the first word or words of the title.
Citing a quote within a quote is as simple as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. List the original authors last name. Include the date of publication of the original. Add as cited in then the name of the work. Follow with the publishing date of the cited work. List the page the information can be found on.
A common mistake with quotation marks is to use them around a slogan or a tagline. Dont do this.
Quotation marks can be used when referring to a specific word or letter. (Some writers instead use italics for this purpose, as I have in this guide.) In the previous sentence, letter was properly spelled with two ts.
When an omission is made from within a direct quotation, ellipsis points take the place of the omitted text. A space should appear between each of the three dots, as well as before and after the ellipsis. One of the most common ellipsis point usage errors is to omit the required spaces.
You can use an ellipsisthree consecutive periods, with one space around each ( . . . )to leave out extra or unnecessary words. The ellipsis represents information that you are omitting from a quotation.
The tag may be placed at the beginning, middle, or end of the quotation. Correct use of Signal Phrases: A tag such as states often introduces the quotation and is followed by a comma.
Use square brackets to indicate changes to a quotation, such as adding words, explanations, or emphasis. To emphasize a word or words in a quotation, use italics.
Tag lines are treated as interrupters. When they appear in the middle of quoted words, they are enclosed by two commas; if a tag line appears at the beginning or at the end of quoted material, one comma is enough because we never begin or end a sentence with a comma.
Words can be added or changed to a quote by using brackets. Changes can be used to correct tense or to add necessary information. Brackets can also be used to make the pronouns in a quote consistent. However, brackets should not be used to change the meaning of the quote.
