Your vet has a legal obligation to issue you with a prescription when needed; therefore it only makes sense that they charge a reasonable fee. This fee is nominal, such that it shouldnt prevent you from purchasing your pets medicines.
A: It is unethical, and, in most states, unlawful, for a veterinarian to write a prescription or dispense a prescription drug outside a veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR).
A: AVMAs Principles of Veterinary Medical Ethics require that veterinarians provide prescriptions to clients upon request in lieu of dispensing a drug when a VCPR exists and the veterinarian has determined that the drug is medically indicated.
The purpose of the consent form is to record the clients agreement to treatment based on knowledge of what is involved and the likely consequences. The client may be the owner of the animal, someone acting with the authority of the owner, or someone with statutory or other appropriate authority.
Can a veterinarian refuse to write a prescription for a client/patient? There is no requirement in Texas law for a veterinarian to write prescriptions. Veterinarians are among the few professionals that maintain their own drug and medication inventories.
A veterinarian is not under a legal duty to treat an animal, and refusing to treat an animal doesnt make them guilty of malpractice. However, once they agree to a service or procedure, they agree to a level of responsibility and duty of care for your animals wellbeing to the best of their professional ability.
Complaints must be on the Boards Official Complaint Form, which may be obtained by calling, writing, sending e-mail to the Board Offices or downloading the Official Complaint Form. When you request an Official Complaint Form, you will be sent a pamphlet with instructions on filing the complaint.
If a client requests a written prescription, a veterinarian is obligated to provide it as per Regulation 1093 section 26. Veterinarians may charge a fee for providing the written prescription.
