What is DITA? Weve talked about structured content in other videos, but the important thing to understand is that structured content is content that conforms to a predetermined standard. Content that conforms to a predetermined standard is intelligible for applications and systems. Now, DITA is a unique kind of structured content. DITA was designed specifically for optimizing the publishing of technical documentation. Well come back to that, but first, its good to know *how* DITA is different. Most systems organize and manage content as documents or pages. These documents are written in a linear way. The ideas within these documents intertwine and overlap. DITA content is written AND organized differently. DITA content is written as component parts, topics, which are arranged in maps, and ideally stored in a Component Content Management System. A topic in DITA is the most granular entity of information. ing to the DITA specifications, a topic should be short enough to be easily readable, but long enough to make sense on its own. To cover separate content such as concepts, tasks, reference, the DITA standard specifies different information types.
DITA stands for Darwin Information Type Architecture, and is a generic and adaptable XML-based open standard to manage, create, and publish content. Defined and maintained by the OASIS DITA Technical Committee, DITA uses topics, maps, and output formats to generate documents.
The element provides a top-level container for multiple topics when you create documents using the ditabase document type. The element lets you create any sequence of concept, task, and reference topics, and the ditabase document type lets you further nest these topic types inside each other.
DITA refers to the Darwin Information Typing Architecture. It is based on the idea of building information types for specific representation of structured content from a common initial topic. Like any structured architecture, it is based on a set of rules referenced in a DTD or a schema.
DITA allows you to reuse content by referencing it in another topic. DITA provides several mechanisms for including content by reference ( conref , conkeyref , coderef ). A conref (content reference) creates a direct reference to a specific element of another topic.
DITA (Darwin Information Typing Architecture) is a method of writing and storing content using a set of structuring rules that tell machines how to interpret that content. Its essentially a system of tags and maps that allow you to navigate through your content more easily.
