As with any screening test, an HPV test carries the risk of false-positive or false-negative results. False-positive. A false-positive test result indicates that you have a high-risk type of HPV when you really dont.
A yeast infection can cause some cells to appear abnormal, which means that the results of a Pap smear come back as ASC-US. However, this is not an indication of cervical cancer.
The only sure way to find out if you have cervical cancer is to get a screening test (a Pap test and/or an HPV test). If you are a woman who has not had her cervix removed by surgery (a hysterectomy), keep getting tested until you are at least 65 years old.
Abnormal Pap test results include. Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
How often should a Pap smear be repeated? Doctors generally recommend repeating Pap testing every three years for women ages 21 to 65. Women age 30 and older can consider Pap testing every five years if the procedure is combined with testing for HPV. Or they might consider HPV testing instead of the Pap test.
Its up to 30 percent of people [who] are falsely positive. These false positive cases can lead to unnecessary, higher risk follow-up procedures, like biopsies. Thats a lot of women that are unnecessarily worried.
Sometimes, after several negative HPV tests, a woman may have a positive HPV test result. This is not necessarily a sign of a new HPV infection. Sometimes an HPV infection can become active again after many years.
In most cases (9 out of 10), HPV goes away on its own within two years without health problems. But when HPV does not go away, it can cause health problems like genital warts and cancer. Genital warts usually appear as a small bump or group of bumps in the genital area.
It usually takes around 10 15 years for cervical cancer to develop as a result of HPV infection that does not clear up, so checking for HPV every five years (through a Cervical Screening Test) is a safe way to identify women who are infected with HPV.
False positive results Your result may be positive even though there is no HPV infection or changes to cells of the cervix. This is called a false positive. A false positive may mean you will have further tests and find there was no risk of cancer at that time.
