Modifying an EBS volume can take from a few minutes to a few hours depending on the configuration changes being applied. An EBS volume of size 1 TiB can typically take up to 6 hours to be modified. However, the same volume might take 24 hours or longer in other situations.
With Amazon EBS Elastic Volumes, you can increase the volume size, change the volume type, or adjust the performance of your EBS volumes. If your instance supports Elastic Volumes, you can do so without detaching the volume or restarting the instance.
You can attach multiple EBS volumes to a single instance. The volume and instance must be in the same Availability Zone. Depending on the volume and instance types, you can use Multi-Attach to mount a volume to multiple instances at the same time.
Add instance store volumes to an instance When you launch an instance, the default block device mapping is provided by the specified AMI. If you need additional instance store volumes, you must add them to the instance as you launch it. You can also omit devices specified in the AMI block device mapping.
To increase the storage disk size, follow these steps: Locate the instance in your EC2 dashboard and click on the Instance ID. Click on the Storage tab and then on the Volume ID. In the Actions dropdown at the top of the page, click Modify Volume. Set the new size and save.
To attach an EBS volume to an instance using the console Open the Amazon EC2 console at . In the navigation pane, choose Volumes. Select the volume to attach and choose Actions, Attach volume. You can attach only volumes that are in the Available state.
Extend the ext4 filesystem The resize2fs command is used to enlarge an ext4 filesystem. Using the df command, list all the filesystems on your EC2 instance once more. The filesystems size is raised after using the resize2fs command.
EBS currently supports a maximum volume size of 64 TiB. This means that you can create an EBS volume as large as 64 TiB, but whether the OS recognizes all of that capacity depends on its own design characteristics and on how the volume is partitioned.
How to increase the memory of a Linux EC2 instance Click on the volume for the instance. With the correct volume selected, click on the Actions Modify Volume. Change the size of the volume to a bigger size and click Modify. Confirm the changes and click yes. Close the dialog.
To set the properties of the root volume for an EC2 instance, you must identify the device name of the root volume for your Amazon Machine Image (AMI). Then, you can use the BlockDeviceMapping property of an AWS::EC2::Instance resource to set the properties of the root volume.
