During a Pap smear, a healthcare professional takes a small sample of cervical cells to screen for cervical cancer. Collecting cells from the cervix can cause light bleeding or spotting that may last for 12 days.
Rotate a spatula 360 once to obtain a single sample. Smear the sample onto the labeled slide. Fix the sample immediately (before it is air-dried) using a cytology spray fixative. Hold the fixative 15-20 cm (6 to 8 inches) away from the slide and evenly spray the slide by depressing the plunger 2 or 3 times.
All you need to do is insert a swab a few centimetres into your vagina and rotate it for 20 to 30 seconds. The sample can be taken in a private place within a healthcare clinic. View the detailed instructions. Remove the swab replace it in the packaging and seal the whole thing up and thats it.
Theyll gently put a smooth, tube-shaped tool (a speculum) into your vagina. A small amount of lubricant may be used. The nurse will open the speculum so they can see your cervix. Using a soft brush, theyll take a small sample of cells from your cervix.
Most abnormal Pap tests are caused by HPV infections. Other types of infectionsuch as those caused by bacteria, yeast, or protozoa (Trichomonas)sometimes lead to minor changes on a Pap test called atypical squamous cells.
How Often Should I Have a Pap Smear? You should have the test every 3 years from ages 21 to 65. You may choose to combine your Pap testing with being tested for the human papillomavirus (HPV) starting at age 30. If you do so, then you can be tested every 5 years instead.
Acceptable specimens for the Pap Test include cervical, cervical and vaginal, endocervical, vaginal and/or vulvar scrapings or brushings.
