Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you. (Deut. 4:2.)
Here are three principles you should keep in mind the next time you quote Scripture publicly: Mention the context instead of giving the reference. Remember that quotations by their nature always omit something. Quote the words that make the best sense standing alone.
Proverbs 3:5-6 - Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 - Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.
Quotation marks should begin and end your quoting of Scripture. The beginning quotation mark means this is where you start copying and then the end quotation mark means this is where you stop copying. A reminder that quotation marks mean you are copying word for word. Do not change anything.
When citing a passage of scripture, include the abbreviated name of the book, the chapter number, and the verse numbernever a page number. Chapter and verse are separated by a colon. Example: 1 Cor. 13:4, 15:12-19.
The first time you cite the Bible in-text, include the name of the version of the Bible, followed by an abbreviation of the book, the chapter and verse(s). For subsequent references, simply include the book, chapter, and verse.
Thessalonians5:6-8. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
