A question mark, exclamation point, or dash is placed within the quotation marks when it is part of the quoted material. Otherwise it is placed outside the quotation marks.
Quotation Marks: There are two types of quotation marks: single ( ) and double ( ). Single Quotation Marks are used to indicate dialogue within another quotation. Example: The girl answered her mother by saying, I dont want to go alone. She appeared to be shivering from the cold (4).
You signal this inclusion by placing quotation marks ( ) around the source authors words and providing an in-text citation after the quotation. Direct quotations differ from other in-text citations because they require that you include the page number on which the words can be found in the source text.
An exact quote should be in quotation marks ( ), or if the quotation is 40 words or more, should be formatted as a block quotation. Then you put an In-Text Citation right after the quotation to show where the quote came from.
Introducing Quotations X states, [blank]. As X puts it, [blank]. ing to X, [blank]. X writes, [blank]. In her book/essay [blank], X maintains that [blank]. Writing in the journal [blank], X complains that [blank]. In Xs view, [blank]. X agrees when she writes, [blank].
There are three strategies you can use to embed quotations: set off quotations, build in quotations, or introduce quotations with a colon. Set-off quotations are set off from the sentence with a comma. Capitalize the first word of the quote. Notice the signal phrases (in bold print) used in the following examples.
Direct Quotations Quotation marks always come in pairs. Capitalize the first letter of a direct quote when the quoted material is a complete sentence. Do not use a capital letter when the quoted material is a fragment or only a piece of the original materials complete sentence.
When to use quotation marks 1 Quote a source directly. 2 Show dialogue or transcribe speech. 3 Signal the titles of short works. 4 Set apart a word to show irony, sarcasm, or skepticism (scare quotes) 5 Discuss words as words. 6 Differentiate a nickname from a given name. 1 Place punctuation marks inside quotation marks.
