When you use quotes, you must first use a transitional phrase (such as For example,, In addition, Furthermore, etc). This is called the transition. Secondly, you must first provide the context of the quote (who is speaking and in what situation?).
You signal this inclusion by placing quotation marks ( ) around the source authors words and providing an in-text citation after the quotation. Direct quotations differ from other in-text citations because they require that you include the page number on which the words can be found in the source text.
Your strength will be found when you stop struggling with yourself, instead of thinking everyone is a struggle worth overcoming. Every obstacle in life is a lesson that teaches us, not others. Lessons in life will be repeated until they are learned.
Embedding Quotations. Embedding a quotation means that the quotation is included in a single sentence with many of your own words and commentary. Embedded: ing to Creon, Princess Antigone is not good enough for his son because she is only a woman and a hellcat that will bring him nothing but trouble (Jones 960).
The same rule applies to titles and words used in a special sense or for emphasis. Use double quotation marks () around a direct quote. A direct quote is a word- for-word report of what someone else said or wrote. You use the exact words and punctuation of the original.
WRITE A COMPLETE SENTENCE STATING YOUR CLAIM OR OBSERVATION, and follow with a colon and the quotation. Example: Preston demonstrates that Director Lou Bellamy knows how to get the audience involved: members often call out involuntarily to charactersresponding to their queries and whims, offering advice and succor.
There are three strategies you can use to embed quotations: set off quotations, build in quotations, or introduce quotations with a colon. Set-off quotations are set off from the sentence with a comma. Capitalize the first word of the quote. Notice the signal phrases (in bold print) used in the following examples.
Use quotation marks if the word or words are meant to imply irony or sarcasm. Example: The mayor told the people of his town that he cares about their well-being. Use quotation marks to highlight certain words within a sentence. Example: I wrote your when I meant to write you‟re.
