- [Voiceover] I am the one who takes your picture at the DMV. I probably capture around 200 faces every day. Rumor has it people arent always satisfied with the photos I take. In fact, many say my portraits are supremely unflattering. They want to know why. Allow me to explain. I am ing with you. Theres nothing wrong with my equipment. My finger didnt slip. And I wasnt distracted. I am deliberately ruining your photograph to destroy your dignity. And it worked. Your pride crumbled as I gave it to you. At the bar. (laughing) On your first date to the movies. (laughing) - Oh my God. And while getting a ticket. (laughing) - Joey, look at this! (laughing) Hey, you! Come over here! (laughing) - God I love my job. When I see a customers face I immediately think how can I photograph this fool in an obnoxious way that will completely obliterate their confidence? If you are wondering what do I need to take my permit test, when visiting the DMV, all teen drivers should bring: A completed application form. Each form has a unique barcode, so theyre not available online. Your social security number. Two different forms proving your California residency. Your $35 application fee.
Can I smile in my California ID photo? The California DMV requires a neutral facial expression with the mouth closed for ID photos.
See the instruction permit page on the DMV website for current requirements. You will also need to pay the DMV fee, have your picture taken, and give a thumbprint. Once you pass your written test, you will be issued a provisional instruction permit.
I believe that in most states, including NY State, you get your picture taken when you get your learners permit. Then while you are learning you have a picture ID. Then when you pass your road test, the state merely sends you a new picture ID with the same picture that is now your license.
Take the online test. The at-home online knowledge test is available online weekdays Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., except on State holidays. The test is supervised remotely, so it requires you to use a webcam and cannot be done on a smartphone or tablet.
If youre short on time, heres a quick answer: Yes, the photo from your California learners permit will be the same photo printed on your drivers license. You dont need to retake it when upgrading from a permit to a license.
You must schedule an appointment at your local DMV office for a photo retake and / or change your name. Make an appointment at TLC to receive a temporary license.
To get a new photo on your driver license/ID card, you must visit a driver license office and order a duplicate for $11.
