A proxy card will almost always have a different rosette pattern than a genuine card. It can be one thats well done, but different nonetheless. When doing this test, its important to have a reference card from the same set to go back to, since genuine cards can have different patterns over the years.

Proxies (creating a card out of something else) are not legal in sanctioned events. Altered cards (changing the art while keeping the cards identity intact) can be allowed at the discretion of the head judge.
A proxy card is used during competition to represent an otherwise legal Magic card or checklist card that can no longer be included in a deck without the deck being marked.
Proxy cards should not be confused with Counterfeit Cards. Although both are cards in the sense that neither is an authentic card, the goal of a proxy card is not to fool someone into believing it is authentic, but to be a temporary stand-in for a real card.
