Disadvantages of a photo on your CV The photo could draw attention away from the contents of your CV your skills and experience. You risk potential discrimination based on your appearance, age, ethnicity and gender. It comes across as unprofessional or too informal. Youre giving up precious space on your CV.
For a job application, you should use a photo specifically designed for this purpose (no old Facebook pictures). Use a photo that shows your entire face (evenly lit) and where youre looking directly into the camera (a bit of a smile is OK). The background should be neutral.
No fashion statements, crazy hairstyles or makeup experiments. Dont oversize your photo You may look great, but you dont want to take up the precious space you need for your resumes contents. A small, passport-sized photo in the top right corner of your resume will suffice.
Recruiters will be used to receiving resumes/CVs with or without resume photos, depending on the occupation in question. When in doubt, to err on the safe side, we suggest not including a photo.
Photos on resumes can be risky because of unconscious bias and discrimination. Because of that risk, many employers in the United States prefer to avoid resumes with photos altogether. It keeps them from being liable for breaking strict anti-discrimination laws.
Since photos can be distracting, take up room on a resume, and generally look out of place for most job submissions, skip adding a photo to your resume for most professions. But, there are exceptions to the rule. In addition to your location, your industry sometimes calls for it.
These are some steps you can follow to take a professional headshot: Ask a friend or use a tripod. Find your location and lighting. Prepare for your headshot. Check the angle of the camera. Set the camera in different modes. Choose a plain background. Try different poses. Use photo editing apps to fix issues.
