The rule adopted by LaTeX is to regard a period (full stop) as the end of a sentence if it is preceded by a lowercase letter. If the period is preceded by an uppercase letter then LaTeX assumes that it is not a full stop but follows the initials of somebody's name. This works very well in most cases.
\@ before punctuation says that the period does fall at the end of a sentence. to quote from the latex manual (p. 170): \@ Causes an "end-of-sentence" space after punctuation when typed before the punctuation character.
1 \@ Synopsis: capital-letter \@. Treat a period as sentence-ending, where LaTeX would otherwise think it is part of an abbreviation. LaTeX thinks that a period ends an abbreviation if the period comes after a capital letter, and otherwise thinks the period ends the sentence.
Type \begin{tabbing} . This will initiate the tabbing environment in your LaTeX code. This method manually sets tab stops in your text. If you're just getting started, check out our guides on installing LaTeX and coding.
Avoiding large space after full stop# But LaTeX will normally assume that a full stop ends a sentence and will therefore create a larger whitespace after e.g. or i.e. . To avoid this, we need to add a \ after the abbreviation, as in e.g.\ or i.e.\ .
\@ declares the period that follows is to be a sentence-ending period. \[ — same as \begin{displaymath} or $$. \\ terminates a line. \\* terminates a line, but disallows a pagebreak.
id est and exempli gratia (i.e. and e.g.) To prevent LaTeX from adding space after the last period, the correct syntax is either " i.e.\ " or " e.g.\ ", or else " i.e., " and " e.g., " with a comma. The comma is interpreted by LaTeX as part of a sentence, since the period is not followed by any space.
Punctuation for Abbreviations: Names and Titles Abbreviate names with a single letter followed by a period. If two successive letters are abbreviated, do not include spaces between the periods. If a person's full name is abbreviated, use only first letters without periods: JFK (John F. Kennedy), LBJ (Lyndon B.
allows you to reference any of the arguments inside using #1 (for the first argument, which is optional in this case), #2 (for the second argument), ... #n (for the n-th argument) up to 9.
To achieve a particular line-spacing multiple such as 1.5, 2, 3 etc., the \baselinestretch command has to be set to seemingly “strange” values; for example by using the \linespread command.
