A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is a document that contains information on the potential hazards (health, fire, reactivity and environmental) and how to work safely with the chemical product. It is an essential starting point for the development of a complete health and safety program.
The main difference between an MSDS and an SDS is the standardized formatting. All SDSs follow the GHSs 16 section formatting, while MSDSs could come in many different formats depending on the organization. Beyond that, they aim to convey the same information regarding chemical hazards.
Safety Data Sheets (SDS)/Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) Citations should include the title of the data sheet, which is the name of the material; the MSDS number; the manufacturing company; the location of the company; and the date on which the document was released.
OSHA mandates that SDS must be provided to employees working with hazardous materials. OSHA does not tell us how to provide SDS to employees, so you can print a book or provide them digitally, as long as the employee has access throughout the workday, and each employee has been provided training on how to access them.
A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) (formerly MSDS) is designed to provide both workers and emergency personnel with the proper procedures for handling or working with a particular substance.
As a practical matter, the most docHub major change required by June 1, 2015, was the switch from MSDS to SDS. The information contained in SDS is similar but not identical to that in an MSDS, and the SDS must be presented in a new user-friendly, 16-section format.
SDSs can be stored electronically or as paper copies. SDSs must be stored in a location that all staff can access during work hours (not behind a locked door or on a password-protected device to which they do not have the password). SDSs must be stored in the work area (not far away or in another building).
The new standard the SDS, which officially replaced the MSDS saw many improvements in consistency and format and is the ongoing standard for health and safety information on hazardous chemicals.
