Those new to peer review often ask how long their report should be. But this is not a question that can (or should) be answered definitively. For interests sake, reports analysed in a study conducted by Publons were on average 477 words. Reviews for articles in medical journal BMJ averaged about 530 words.
Difficulty in finding appropriate reviewers. Delayed response from reviewers. Unhelpful review reports reviews that are a single sentence or paragraph are unhelpful to authors or editors. A normal review report should be two to three pages in length, sometimes longer.
Review Outline Summary of the research and your overall impression. In your own words, summarize what the manuscript claims to report. Discussion of specific areas for improvement. Its helpful to divide this section into two parts: one for major issues and one for minor issues. Any other points.
Most commonly the format is (1) Summary, (2) Decision, (3) Major Concerns, and (4) Minor Concerns (see also Structure Diagram above). There is also often a multiple choice form to rate the paper on a number of criteria.
In general, academic articles are between 4,000 and 7,000 words long. However, there is a lot of variability depending on the discipline, article type, and journal. For example, medicine and science articles tend to be shorter than social science and humanities articles.
General strengths and weaknesses. o A detailed list of more granular comments about: structure, evidence, points of unclarity or confusion, graphicsany changes that will make the paper stronger and help bolster its conclusion. If the changes are major or structural, please list them in order importance or theme.
Scholarly / peer reviewed articles are usually long, (10-20 pages) with technical vocabulary, charts and graphs.
One to two pages is typically the norm; however, I have submitted a few three- to four-page reviews when I thought an article was already quite good, but could be better.
