Curleys hands are mean and cruel and one, of course, is crushed in the machine that is Lennie; Curleys hand that he keeps soft for his wife is a symbol of his impotence and inability to satisfy his wife sexually.
Slim is angry at Curley for constantly asking about his wife. Curley, on the defensive and looking for someone to fight, picks a fight with Lennie and punches him unmercifully. Lennie doesnt protect himself until George tells him to fight back. When Lennie does, he crushes all the bones in Curleys hand.
When George says that Curleys wife seems like a tramp, Lennie responds that he thinks she is purty, causing George to warn Lennie to keep away from her, just like hes supposed to keep away from Curley.
George takes his hat off and asks Lennie to do so too; then he tells Lennie to look across the river while he tells him their dream once again.
His names Curley, and hes introduced wearing a glove on his left hand and high-heeled boots, the type of boots designed for sitting on a horse and telling OTHER people what to do.
He tells Lennie about the rabbits, and promises that nobody will ever be mean to him again. Les do it now, Lennie says. Les get that place now. George agrees. He raises Carlsons gun, which he has removed from his jacket, and shoots Lennie in the back of the head.
From Slim and George returning to the bunkhouse to George comforting Lennie after the fight with Curley.
George Returns As the white men leave Crookss bunk, Crooks calls out to Candy and tells him to forget about him coming to work on the farm. Of Mice and Men: Chapter 4 ends up with Crooks alone in his room, rubbing liniment on his back.
In Chapter Four, its Saturday night and most of the men have gone into the nearby town to go to a brothel , leaving behind Lennie, Candy and Crooks (a disabled man who works in the stables and is the only black man on the ranch), as well as Curleys wife. Lennie goes to Crooks room in the stable.
During the conversation, Lennie tells Crooks about the dream of owning a farm. Crooks doesnt believe that it will ever happen. He starts to question the relationship between George and Lennie. During this conversation, Crooks asks Lennie what he would do if George got hurt.
