A Preferred First Name means an alternative to the legal first name requested by an individual to be used on certain University-related records or documents in place of their legal name and is a name by which an individual wish to be known that is different from the individuals legal name.
Your Legal Name will still appear where it is required by law, such as on financial aid documents, payroll documents, and federal immigration documents. You may change your Preferred Name once per year. There is no limit on how often you may change your Pronoun.
A preferred/chosen name is any name a student chooses to use other than their legal name. For example, a student may wish to shorten their first name (e.g. Steven to Steve) or to be referred to by their middle name or a nickname.
What is a Preferred Name? The term Preferred Name refers to a name that an individual wishes to use that differs from their student record name on official UW documents and/or differs from the name that is listed on a student or employees original UW record that has not been changed per UW name change procedures.
Definitions. Legal name: The name as it appears on a legal document such as a Social Security card or other document in which a legal name change is recorded (e.g. court order). Preferred name: The name a person wishes to be known and have appear in the University systems.
How Do I Update My Chosen Name? Log into your MyUTK using your NetID and password. Click on the My Resources drop down menu in the upper-right corner of the MyUTK home screen. Select Change Chosen Name. A new tab will open that takes you to a landing page where you can type in the correct chosen name.
Click on the Add a Name Change button and from the Name Type drop down select preferred name. You can update your first and/or middle name, then click Save. Preferred name changes will appear immediately. 1.
Name change requests on diplomas and certificates associated with academic records is usually done so that the name the individual is identified with in the outside world can reflect on the document. Name change on a diploma might be done after changing ones name for another, after naturalization, divorce or marriage.
