Resume icons can be a fun and creative touch but should be used only when appropriate for your field and desired position. Phone and email icons for your resume are the safest option and can allow for a bit of personality without going overboard.
Because icons are visually different from text, theyll naturally draw readers attention, so youll want to reserve icons for key resume elements such as your contact information, social media accounts (e.g., Linkedin), or section headings. But dont use them instead of section headings.
You may find yourself asking, Should I include picture on my resume? The answer to that question is no, you should not. That is because a resume photo can: Distract the hiring manager from whats most important (your skills and experience) Get instantly thrown out of the pile to avoid bias or discrimination.
Heres our selection of top 5 websites with free resume icons: Icons8.com. This website offers a wide variety of resume symbols you can use to make your resume truly unique. Freepik.com. You can find here a large selection of free vector icons for a resume. Flaticon.com. Iconfinder.com. Iconmonstr.com.
Consider adding icons next to section headers to underline the theme of the section. You can add the appropriate topical icons to your education, languages, skills, experience and other blocks to make them look unique. This makes it easier for hiring managers to find what they are looking for in the candidate.
Place your cursor in the file at the spot where you want to insert the symbol. Go to Insert Symbol. Pick a symbol, or choose More Symbols. Scroll up or down to find the symbol you want to insert.
Find the Right Style to Go With the Job Consider the industry and job that youre applying for when adding resume icons. For instance, when applying for a director-level position, using fewer symbols would do the job. The resume would look great if you just use resume icons in the contact information section.
Placing your logo at the upper right and your name at the left side isnt a bad idea as well. Its natural for us to look at the left since we usually start reading at the left side. Employers will automatically start reading your name then look at your logo at the right. Observe this design by The Resume Boutique.
