From 25 February 2024, food businesses are required to meet new plain English allergen labelling requirements for how certain foods known to be common allergens are declared. These changes will mean food allergen information is clearer and easier to find on food labels.
Pre-packed food must have an ingredients list. Allergenic ingredients must be emphasised in some way every time they appear in the ingredients list. For example, you can list them in bold, contrasting colours or by underlining them.
Food businesses need to tell customers if any food they provide contain any of the listed allergens as an ingredient. Consumers may be allergic or have intolerance to other ingredients, but only the 14 allergens are required to be declared as allergens by food law.
Allergen ingredients information should be: recorded on product specification sheets. included on ingredients labels and ingredients should be kept in original or labelled containers. included in recipes or explanations of the dishes provided you need to consider the impact when recipes change.
The law requires that food labels identify the food source of all major food allergens used to make the food. This requirement is met if the common or usual name of an ingredient already identifies that allergens food source name (for example, buttermilk).
Signposting: on the premises For example, your sign could say: Allergies and intolerance: please speak to a member of staff if you require information about our ingredients. The notice should be visible to customers where they place their order.
