The key to good product photography is even, soft light, with no shadows. You can achieve that with either a light-tent (product inside/flashes outside), or by photographing the product against a chosen background and diffusing your flashes.
To evaluate whether the illuminance is adequate, the average illuminance should be compared with the optimum average illumination recommended for the task. The light sensor of the luxmeter should be placed vertically if the object is read vertically.
To evaluate lighting for facilities, you need to understand the basic metrics and measurements that describe the quantity and quality of light. The most common metric is the illuminance, which is the amount of light falling on a surface, measured in foot-candles (fc) or lux (lx).
Importance of Quality Lighting in Product Photography Accurate representation of products: Quality lighting helps to accurately represent the colors, texture, and details of the products being photographed. This is crucial for online businesses where customers rely on product images to make purchasing decisions.
To Light Box or Not to Light Box: For those shooting Jewelry and other highly reflective type items, you may see benefits in shooting product photography inside a light box. For the very high majority of products, a light box will likely hurt product image quality.
To give the object a more three-dimensional look it is important to have a certain direction in the lighting. A smaller Octabox 75 from the right (or from the left!) is in charge of this. It is positioned at an angle of about 35 degrees and at a distance of 90 cm from the object. Here, I use Siros 400S at 283 Joules.
The fill light is placed somewhere on the opposite side of the product to fill in the shadows. A third back light is placed somewhere behind the subject. Backlighting separates the subject from the background. It has the potential to create the halo effect often seen in portraits.
The 45-Degree Standard. One of the most common photo light placements is at 45 degrees, meaning the light is placed at a 45-degree angle from your subject. At 45 degrees, you are most closely emulating what is referred to as Rembrandt lighting, which produces a natural and generally flattering light on your subject.
