What Causes High Exhaust Gas Temperature? As diesel engines run hotter, their efficiency decreases because more fuel is needed to produce power. High EGT readings can be caused by a number of problems, including over-fueling, overheating, or blocked air intake filters or ducting.
How Hot Is Too Hot? Based on our own experience in the sled pulling and drag racing world, we can definitely say that any engine running at 1,800 to 2,000 degrees EGT for more than a second or two should be rebuilt every season and may incur turbocharger, cylinder head, or piston damage during the season.
For a given engine operating condition, this can be achieved by reducing the airflow while keeping fuel flow fixed. An intake or exhaust throttle, early or late intake valve opening, cylinder deactivation and in some cases, cylinder cut-out are some ways this can be carried out in practice. Intake Throttling.
MAN Diesel Turbo Fouling of the turbine side of the turbocharger is a common cause for high exhaust gas temperatures. The sequence of events is often as follows: Fouling of turbine (coke deposit) Bad turbocharger performance Lower airflow and charge air pressure Higher exhaust gas temperatures.
Once the DPF docHubes approximately 840 F (450 C), the High Exhaust System Temperature (HEST) Lamp illuminates. When regeneration is complete, the engine returns to idle. If any of the above conditions change, manual regeneration deactivates and the engine returns to idle.
Diesel engine exhaust gases vary with speed and load. High loads and high speeds result in the highest temperatures. Generally, temperatures of 500700C (9321293F) are produced in the exhaust gases from diesel-cycle engines at 100% load to 200300C (392572F) with no load.

If everything is working properly, 1250 to 1300 F. is a safe turbine inlet temperature, even for sustained running, mile after mile. Above 1300 F. things can start to get edgy. Remember, excessive EGT damage is cumulative.
