A helpful idea for making your baby's first solid-food experience easier is to mix cereal with your breast milk or baby formula. In a bowl or cup, mix 4 to 5 tablespoons of breast milk—or a baby formula like Similac Pro-Advance® with 1 to 2 tablespoons of a single-grain cereal.
(Infant Formula) 22 Calories/Ounce To prepare Similac Advance 22 calories/ounce from powder: Place 6 3/4 fluid ounces (200ml) of water in a container. Add 4 unpacked level scoops (33.2 grams) of Similac Advance Opti Gro powder to container. Shake or stir well.
To make 22-calorie per ounce formula (starting from powder that normally makes 20-calorie per ounce): If you have the concentrated liquid formula, mix 5.5 ounces (163 mL) of formula with 4.5 ounces (133 mL) of water. If you have the powder formula, mix 3 scoops of powder with 5.5 ounces (163 mL) of water.
If you run out of formula and can't find any, in a pinch you can give oral rehydration solution (such as Pedialyte, Enfalyte, or a store brand) for a couple of days. Babies older than 4 to 6 months can also get puréed (finely ground) foods.
❖ Prepare formula or expressed mother's milk with an extra scoop of powdered formula per 8 ounces of prepared formula. Adding this extra scoop of formula will make a 25 calorie/oz formula. ❖ Do not feed your infant low-calorie foods such as water or juice. Feed only mother's milk or formula.
❒ To prepare Enfamil Premium Infant 22 calories/ounce from powder: Place 3 ½ fluid ounces (106 ml) of water in a container. Add 2 unpacked level scoops (17.6 grams) of powder to container. Shake or stir well.
Start feeding your baby solids once a day. Your baby will take only small amounts of solid foods at first. Try one teaspoon at first of pureed vegetable, fruit, or rice cereal in between milk feeds. From 6 to 9 months continue to give your baby breastmilk or formula first, then try solids after the milk.
Use 1 teaspoon of dry cereal for every 4 ounces of pureed food. Sprinkle powdered baby formula into strained meats, poultry, egg yolk, fruits, and vegetables. Use 1 teaspoon of dry formula for every 4 ounces of pureed food. Home-made pureed fruits and vegetables have more calories than purchased baby foods.
Do not incorporate items like powdered cow milk, evaporated milk, or raw milk and sugar. Do not feed infants under the age of one cow's milk or other milk substitutes such as almond or soy beverages. Do not use imported formulas from other countries that have not been reviewed by the FDA.
Some people have been coming up with their own recipes or solutions to make baby formula, which can actually harm a baby's health. Health experts advise against the following: Do not feed babies homemade formula. Do not incorporate items like powdered cow milk, evaporated milk, or raw milk and sugar.
