Provisional Patent Application Costs The cheapest way to get Patent Pending status is to file a provisional patent application. All that is required is a detailed description of the invention, an informal drawing, and a synopsis of how you came up with the idea.

The Patent Electronic System uses the United States Patent and Trademark Offices (USPTO) single sign- on (SSO) system, the USPTO.gov account, for secure authentication. USPTO.gov accounts are based on email address, and each account uses the email address as the account name or user ID.
There are three types of patents - Utility, Design, and Plant. Utility patents may be granted to anyone who invents or discovers any new and useful process, machine, article of manufacture, or compositions of matters, or any new useful improvement thereof.
