Nope! You do not need to shave before a gynecologist appointment (or any doctors appointment!). Your doctor doesnt care how you care for your pubic hair, because it isnt a health or hygiene concern.
American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), guidelines include: If you are at least age 21, you should start cervical cancer screening, even if you are not yet sexually active. If you are younger than 30, you can likely be tested for cervical cancer every other year instead of yearly.
Pap Smear (Cytology) Results Classification Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US). ASC-US is the most common abnormal Pap test result. Atypical glandular cells (AGC).
Pap test results generally depend upon the lab that examines the sample. Some labs only take three days to process the results, while others may need a week or two.
Your healthcare provider will use a small brush, swab or spatula to gently remove cells from the cervix and back of the vagina. He or she will place the cells in a vial of liquid or smear the cells on a glass microscope slide. If you need an HPV test, your provider will take a sample of cells for this test as well.
Avoid intercourse, douching, or using any vaginal medicines or spermicidal foams, creams or jellies for two days before having a Pap smear, as these may wash away or obscure abnormal cells. Try not to schedule a Pap smear during your menstrual period. Its best to avoid this time of your cycle, if possible.
Do You Have To Shave Before A Smear Test? No. You do not need to remove any body hair before a smear test. It may seem embarrassing due to societal stigma around body hair, but doctors and nurses are used to seeing different types of vaginas and their only aim is to ensure that yours is healthy.
It doesnt take much to prepare for a pap smear. Some women may feel like they need to shave their pubic hair, but its unnecessary for this test. You should only tackle it if youll be more comfortable. Your doctor has seen it all, so a little bit of pubic hair wont bother him.
A pap smear is done to look for changes in cervical cells before they turn into cancer. If you have cancer, finding it early on gives you the best chance of fighting it. If you dont, finding cell changes early can help prevent you from getting cancer. Women ages 21-65 should have a Pap smear on a regular basis.
Usually a small spatula or tiny brush is used to gently collect cells from the cervix for the Pap test. You may feel a light scratching when they take the cells, or you may feel nothing at all. You may also have some staining or bleeding after. Gynecological exams should not be painful, but they may be uncomfortable.
