Pulmonary edema is often caused by congestive heart failure. When the heart is not able to pump efficiently, blood can back up into the veins that take blood through the lungs. As the pressure in these blood vessels increases, fluid is pushed into the air spaces (alveoli) in the lungs.
Congestive heart failure causes one or both of the hearts lower chambers stop pumping blood well. As a result, blood can back up in the legs, ankles and feet, causing edema.
A doctor may also recommend diuretics to help eliminate some fluid from the body. Other tips include raising the feet when sitting, minimizing salt intake, avoiding tight footwear, getting some gentle exercise, and speaking with a doctor about how much water to drink.
Pitting edema is not synonymous with heart failure; it can have other causes, including liver and kidney failure. Nonpitting edema is generally not caused by heart failure. Swelling may be so severe as to docHub up to the hips, scrotum, abdominal wall, and eventually, the abdominal cavity (ascites).
Congestive heart failure causes one or both of the hearts lower chambers stop pumping blood well. As a result, blood can back up in the legs, ankles and feet, causing edema.
Right-sided heart failure is caused when the right ventricle is not pumping enough blood into the lungs and the blood/fluid backs up into other parts of the body causing unexplained weight gain from fluid retention, pitting edema in feet and ankles, ascites (fluid retention in the abdomen), loss of appetite or nausea
Following this initial decline in pumping capacity of the heart, a variety of compensatory mechanisms are activated, including the adrenergic nervous system, the renin angiotensin system, and the cytokine system.
Pitting edema is either caused by a localized problem with veins in the affected area, or a systemic problem with your heart, kidneys, or liver function. Edema without pitting is more likely to be caused by issues with your thyroid or lymphatic system.
