Your book proposals table of contents should contain the following sections: Overview. Marketing. Promotion. Competing Books. About the Author. List of Chapters. Chapter-by-chapter Summaries. Sample Chapters.
Write a book proposal that is short, to the point and articulate. Write a one-page cover letter. Compose an introduction of your book idea that fills two pages or less. Include a table of contents. Add a sample of your book. Write a page about your personal information and why you are the best writer for this book.
Generally, youll need to send a query letter to agents before sending them the full manuscript. The query letter is a sales pitch for your book that includes the most important information about your book (genre or subject matter, word count, title) and an enticing hook.
A book proposal often begins with a book pitch, but then theres a lot of information after that. This is a much longer document (usually about 10-25 pages) that not only outlines whats in the book, but makes a case for its marketability.
Formatting a book proposal A book proposal is a lot like a manuscript, but in addition to the sample chapters, it has a section that functions like a business plan, with an overview, author bio, audience analysis, comparative and competitive titles, marketing, publicity, and promotion.
Your pitch therefore needs to mention: your books title, its genre, the setting/time, introduce the central character, and hint at the journey theyre going to go on and/or the problem theyre facing. (Its fine for you to use comparison titles or names of film/TV shows within your pitch).
Your pitch should include the title, length and genre of your novel; a short description of the call to action and the conflict, your target audience; where it fits in the market (i.e. books similar to yours, or authors similar to you also known as comp titles); and your bio.
Key elements of a book proposal include: Overview: A brief introduction to your book, its purpose, and target audience. Target market: A description of your intended readership, including demographics and market size. Author bio: Information about you, your qualifications, and relevant experience or expertise.
