The Enduring Legacy of Card Suits in Gaming Culture The four card suits have long been associated with different meanings and symbolism. Hearts represent love and emotions, diamonds represent wealth and prosperity, clubs represent power and authority, and spades represent death and rebirth.
The suitmarks of the international, or standard, deck indicate two black and two red suitsnamely spades, clubs, hearts, and diamonds. The word spade probably represents the Old Spanish spado (sword), while club is a direct translation of basto, implying that Spanish suits were used
A standard deck of playing cards consists of 52 Cards in each of the 4 suits of Spades, Hearts, Diamonds, and Clubs. Each suit contains 13 cards: Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King.
In poker, suits are used to tie-break decisions such as who gets the button, or who wins a chip in a color-up. Suits are also used to tie-break the bring-in in a stud game. The order used there is alphabetical: clubs is worst, then diamonds, hearts, with spades the highest-ranking.
A standard 52-card French-suited deck comprises 13 ranks in each of the four suits: clubs (), diamonds (), hearts () and spades (). Each suit includes three court cards (face cards), King, Queen and Jack, with reversible (i.e. double headed) images.
The four suits in a deck of cards have a unique card symbolism. The Spades suit symbolizes the Military, the Hearts suit symbolizes the Church, the Diamonds suit symbolizes the Merchant Class, and the Clubs suit Symbolizes Agriculture.
In the English-speaking world, all decks of ordinary playing cards comprise fifty-two cards in four suitsSpades, Hearts, Diamonds, and Clubs, ranked in that orderwith Kings, Queens, and Jacks as face cards and number (or pip) cards from 10 through 2. Instead of a 1, there is an Ace, which has the highest value.
