How to get a prepaid debit card. You can buy a prepaid debit card from a retailer, bank, credit card company or other financial services provider. When you purchase a prepaid debit card and add funds to it, those funds are usually held by a bank or credit union.
Bring your cash and debit or prepaid card to any participating retailer. Hand the cashier your cash and theyll swipe your card. A reload fee may apply. The cashier will give you a receipt as proof of the reload.
Online Payment Transfer You can load money onto your prepaid debit card by logging onto the website of the card issuer and transfer money across from another account. Many prepaid debit card issuers have their own mobile apps and you can use them to load funds onto your card from another account.
Prepaid cards generally allow you to make purchases in the same way as credit and debit cards. The key difference is that prepaid cards arent linked to a bank account or a line of credit. So to use one, money has to be loaded onto the card. Keep in mind that there may be fees to activate or use prepaid cards.
Add a debit or credit card to the Google Wallet app Open the Google Wallet app . At the bottom, tap Add to Wallet . Tap Payment card. Tap New credit or debit card. At the bottom, tap Save and continue. Read the Issuer Terms and tap Accept. If youre asked to verify your payment method, choose an option from the list.
Disadvantages. Pre-paid debit cards do not help you build credit. Many pre-paid debit cards charge fees before you even start using them. There is usually a monthly fee and fees on common transactions such as ATM withdrawals, card replacement, direct deposit, and reloading the card.
A prepaid card is not linked to a checking account. Instead, it is pre-loaded with a balance of funds. Then each purchase you make is deducted from that balance. In most cases, you cant spend more money than you have already loaded onto your prepaid card.
