Captions should add new information. Dont merely repeat the story headline or summary, and avoid stating the obvious elements that are captured in the image. The caption should add context to the image, not just duplicate what the reader already sees. Always identify the main people in the photograph.
MLA Caption Style For images found in a book or journal, include the publication information of the text. A caption ordinarily appears directly below the illustration and have the same one-inch margins as the text of the paper. Captions should be numbered consecutively.
Figure captions Figures should be labeled with a number followed by a descriptive caption or title. Captions should be concise but comprehensive. They should describe the data shown, draw attention to important features contained within the figure, and may sometimes also include interpretations of the data.
Five must-have elements for photo captions The What Informative description of what the image depicts. The When The time of year the image was taken. The Where The location where the image was taken. The How it was photographed Truthful disclosure of the conditions under which the image was captured.

Traditionally, captions did not overtly state the main finding of the data being presented. Instead, a typical figure caption would only indicate the variables being discussed, for example, Scatterplot showing the relationship between X and Y.
Captions should provide sufficient detail to help readers understand images without reading the text. They should include what the image is showing, its source, and the main point or takeaway. Captions should be concise, accurate, and consistent with the style, format, and terminology of the report.
