A caption is a brief description accompanying an illustration. You know the online photo of your baby cousin face-planting into a cake? The description underneath it that says Hughs First Birthday thats the caption.
There are three parts of a caption: In the first sentence, explain what is happening in the photo in present tense. The second sentence is often past tense and gives background information about the photo or the situation. The third sentence should give a quote from a witness or someone who was involved in the activity.
Word Click the picture you want to add a caption to. Click References Insert Caption. To use the default label (Figure), type your caption in the Caption box.
Keep it concise. That is, it should be no longer than a paragraph, but really, a sentence should be sufficient, at most. In fact, captions dont even need to be complete sentences. For a photograph, its okay to make it shorter than a sentence, such as Kayley on the Ferris wheel.
A caption functions like a heading for a table. Most screen readers announce the content of captions. Captions help users to find a table and understand what its about and decide if they want to read it. If the user uses Tables Mode, captions are the primary mechanism to identify tables.
Add captions On the References tab, in the Captions group, click Insert Caption. In the Label list, select the label that best describes the object, such as a figure or equation. If the list doesnt provide the label you want, click New Label, type the new label in the Label box, and then click OK.
Tips for writing photo captions that will enhance your content Start by checking your facts. Use conversational language. Use the present tense. Use humor when appropriate. Add new information. Let interest determine the length. Use quotes when possible. Include descriptions.
How do you write captions? Write like a human. Make the most of your first line. Add value: educate, inspire, inform. Include a call to action. Stay true to your brand voice.
