Figure captions Figures should be labeled with a number followed by a descriptive caption or title. Captions should be concise but comprehensive. They should describe the data shown, draw attention to important features contained within the figure, and may sometimes also include interpretations of the data.
Label and number the figure on a line under the image itself, using either Figure or Fig. Capitalize the F in this case, but not when referring to your figure in the body text. Give it a descriptive title following the label and number, and then without punctuation write from and include Works Cited entry.
Figures should be: Labeled (under the figure) with the figure number and appropriate descriptive title (Figure can be spelled out [Figure 1.] or abbreviated [Fig. 1.] as long as you are consistent). Numbered in the order they appear in the text.
A Figure and its caption should appear on the same page. All captions should start with a capitalized word and end with a period. They can be sentence case or title case, but be consistent throughout the thesis.
General Guidelines Keep the description as short as possible. Consider both the content and the function of the figure. Make the first sentence a title less than 125 characters long. Go from general to more specific details. Use the same writing style and terminology as the main text.
Figure captions are an important aspect of scientific data reporting as they help readers understand and correctly interpret a figure. Any graph or image in a report is considered incomplete without a proper caption. Figure 1. Ammonium Sulfate treatment increases the growth rate of tomato plants (Solanum lycopersicum).
Captions should be concise but comprehensive. They should describe the data shown, draw attention to important features contained within the figure, and may sometimes also include interpretations of the data. Figures are typically read from the bottom up, so captions go below the figure and are left-justified.

Figure Captions each figure is sequentially numbered and Figure is written out in full to start the caption e.g. Figure 2. the caption should include enough information to be interpreted without reading the text of the report (a proper caption allows you to display your work elsewhere, e.g. a poster or presentation)
