bmi or body mass index is a measure of a persons body fat based on height and weight and a high bmi can increase a persons risk for certain diseases it is calculated by taking your weight in kilograms and dividing it by your height in meters squared if youre using pounds for weight and feet or inches for height then we need to do some conversions lets say someone is 175 pounds and 5 foot 9. to convert pounds to kilograms one pound equals 0.4536 kilograms so you multiply by 0.453 so 175 pounds times 0.4536 equals 79.38 kilograms to convert feet to meters first convert feet to inches 12 inches in a foot so 5 times 12 equals 60 inches plus 9 inches equals a total of 69 inches one inch equals 0.0254 meters so multiply by 0.0254 so 69 times 0.0254 equals 1.75 meters now we have all that we need for the formula 79.38 kilograms divided by 1.7526 meters squared equals a bmi of 25.8 and here is the formula for bmi using common us metrics of pounds and inches here is a chart listing the weig

Calculate Your BMI Body Mass Index (BMI) is a persons weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters. A high BMI can indicate high body fatness.
Because BMI utilizes only body weight and height and does not take into account overall body composition, including body fat, muscular individuals may be classified as obese. Consequently, even though it is widely accepted, BMI may actually be a poor indicator for obesity in the adolescent athletic population.
Then, calculate BMI by dividing weight in pounds (lb) by height in inches (in) squared and multiplying by a conversion factor of 703. When using a handheld calculator, if your calculator has a square function, divide weight (lb) by height (in) squared, multiply by 703, and round to one decimal place.
Under 18.5 - you are very underweight and possibly malnourished. 18.5 to 24.9 - you have a healthy weight range for young and middle-aged adults. 25.0 to 29.9 - you are overweight. Over 30 - you are obese.
Increase Your Calorie Intake To gain weight your body needs to take in more calories than it burns. Eating more calories will help increases weight, which increases BMI. It is easier to figure out how to lose weight than it is to gain weight. Everyones bodies are different and factors such as genetics come into play.
With the metric system, the formula for BMI is weight in kilograms (kg) divided by height in meters (m) squared. Since height is commonly measured in centimeters (cm), an alternate formula can be useddivide weight in kg by height in cm squared, and multiply the result by 10,000.
First, you will need your height, in inches, and your body weight. Once you have these two factors, you will plug the numbers into a simple formula. The formula for BMI is: weight divided by height squared, times 703. You can also electronically calculate your BMI using the CDCs Adult BMI Calculator.
