The ideal of a postal code on a credit card helps keep purchases secure. The person using the card must know the zip code the cardholder used for the billing address when they got the card. If they dont have that information or it is entered incorrectly, the charge will not be authorized by the card issuer.
If youre ever prompted for your credit card postal code when making a purchase online or over the phone, use the postal code from the billing address thats on file with the card company.
Any in-person purchase where you present the card does not require a billing address, unless you are purchasing an item which need to be delivered later. Online purchases all require the billing address, since the card is not present. The only time youd need a billing address would be ordering online or on the phone.
If youre adding a card for the first time and receiving an error that the zip/postal code is incorrect, it means that what is on file with the bank and what youre entering do not match. Simply contact your bank to confirm the current billing zip/postal code on file and re-add the card.
So, do prepaid cards have ZIP codes? Prepaid cards do not usually have ZIP codes printed on them. Usually, prepaid cards only have your 16-digit card number, your expiration date, and CVV code printed on them. You do not usually need to provide your ZIP code when you make purchases with your prepaid card.
The zip code is the cardholders identity. When you are asked to bypass the zip code during the purchase, you can simply skip it by inserting your home or office address zip code or the zip code where your card has been issued.
Ensure that there are no missing characters or misspellings in the name and address you entered and that the card number you entered is correct. Double-check the zip code and ensure it matches the one it has on file. Please contact your bank to check what the card-issuing bank has on file if necessary.
