hi Im Ted today Im going to show you how to extract the zip code in Excel with a formula I have a spreadsheet here that has several addresses and theyre all they all start with the full address all in one cell all in text format and that thats a key to working the way Im going to describe it is that youre assuming that the zip code is going to come from the last part of an address thats all one text item in in a cell so the formula were going to use is a text formula called write RA ght so we in this column here were going to start entering a formula were going to say equals and then write righ T and as you can see Excel is starting to populate the the formula with a formulate recognizes which is always a good sign and then we type the left print parenthesis and then enter in the cell that has the contents of the address and then since we want the five characters at the right side of the text wed say comma and the second argument of the function is is five because we want fi

Select the cell or range of cells that you want to format. , click the arrow, and then click More Number Formats. In the Format Cells dialog box, under Category, click Special. In the Type list, click Zip Code or Zip Code + 4.
Select the first cell that you want to populate the ZIP code for. You are going to now call the function which in the script window we named geo2zip. In that cell paste =geo2zip() and in the parentheses type in the cell containing the concatenated address information.

Now your nine-digit ZIPs are shortened to five-digit zip codes.Follow the steps below to shorten to five digits: Insert a new column to the right of your current zip code column. Type or copy and paste =LEFT(C2,5) , replacing C2 with your cells identifier. Drag the formula down the rest of your column.
Create a custom postal code format In the Category box, click Custom. In the Type list, select the number format that you want to customize. The number format that you select appears in the Type box above the Type list. For example, to customize the predefined Zip Code + 4 format, select 00000-0000 in the Type list.
One method is to use the Text to Columns feature. This can be found under the Data tab in the ribbon. Once you have your data in the correct format, you can use the Sort feature to sort by ZIP Code. Another method is to use a formula to extract the first five digits of the ZIP Code, then sort by that column.
Apply a predefined postal code format to numbers Select the cell or range of cells that you want to format. On the Home tab, under Number, on the Number Format pop-up menu. , click Custom. In the Format Cells dialog box, under Category, click Special. In the Type list, click Zip Code or Zip Code + 4.
Use the 00000 format to display a number with five digits. When you use this format, the numbers that you type and the numbers that Microsoft Excel displays are listed in the following table.
