Archivo. The underused Archivo is a modern, somewhat quirkier Helvetica replacement.
When used as text or a user interface, the fonts tight spacing and uniformity pose readability issues. Moreover, he says, designers often blindly use Helvetica because of its neutral design without thinking much about context, which he defines as cultural environment, competitive products, format and medium.
His aim was to counter the success of Akzidenz Grotesk, the typeface launched by their competitors, the H. Berthold AG foundry. In 1957, Miedinger came up with a new set of characters, which he named Neue Haas Grotesk.
In 1957 Max Miedinger made Helvetica. In fact it was called Neue Haas Grotesk, but for marketing reasons the name was changed to Helvetica in 1960. Miedinger based his design on other Grotesks, one of which was Haas Grotesk (1912).
What is Typographical Contrast? Simply put it is the grouping of two typographical elements, then using different methods of traditional design to create contrast. The contrast places emphasis on the important element of type, letting the secondary element command less attention.
The font shown in the example is stressed; this means that strokes have varying widths. In this example, the stroke at the top of the g is thinner at the top and bottom than on the sides a vertical stress. Fonts without any variation in the stroke width are known as monoline fonts.
