John Steinbeck uses symbolic imagery through the setting of the river, the bunkhouse, tactile imagery, and animal imagery in George and Lennies story. Throughout the novella, one of the main characters, Lennie, is described through animalistic imagery.
Why is it used? Lennies mental disability makes him unable to understand situations, the way that others behave and what they say. His size and lack of intelligence are often emphasised through the comparisons made between him and animals.
The farm that George constantly describes to Lenniethose few acres of land on which they will grow their own food and tend their own livestockis one of the most powerful symbols in the book.
Terms in this set (10) Imagery. Evening of a hot day started the little wind to moving among the leaves. Foreshadowing. Suspense. Figurative Language - Simile. Figurative Language -Metaphor. Characterization - Direct. Characterization - Indirect. Personification.
Steinbeck utilizes repetition and circular structure to convey the lure and challenges of the American Dream in Of Mice and Men. Throughout the story, Lennie and George have a dream of owning a little plot of land. In this dream, the pair have a place they belong, and Lennie will get to tend to the rabbits.
Lennie is himself very like a mouse, symbolically: his and Georges best laid plans really do go astray and he, like a mouse, is subject to the whims of destiny that ultimately control his life.
Important symbols in Of Mice and Men include: Mice, a symbol of false hope. The dream farm, representing independence and protection. Candys dog, symbolizing the fate of the weak and those who do not fit into societys expectations.
A good example of imagery can be found when Steinbeck is describing Curleys wife when she enters the bunk house. He writes, She had full, rouged lips and wide-spaced eyes, heavily made up. Her fingernails were red. Her hair hung in little rolled clusters, like sausages.
Lennie is also associated with rabbits, which are part of his dream (he will get to tend them on the farm) and because they are soft things he likes to pet. Rabbits also symbolize his realization that he is in trouble; if Lennie does a bad thing, George will not let him tend the rabbits.
Straightforward, Colloquial, Unpretentious, Earnest Steinbecks writing style mirrors his characters. Of course the author writes as the men would literally speak, but on a deeper level, the language of the book is simple but compellingjust like the characters.
