- Support student writers in learning and mastering a couple key graphic organizers. When engaged in a narrative unit or creating stories, then the basic Storyboard is a nice universal option. The Storyboard accounts for a beginning, middle, and end and goes in a chronological order. This tool works great for our primary writers, but the best graphic organizers are those that are flexible and adaptable for all levels. Show students how they can adjust the basic Storyboard to meet any intermediate, middle school, or high school product. We want the middle or body of their writing to be much bigger than the beginning or end. So the first thing we can do is provide them the five-box Storyboard with a beginning, three body paragraphs or middle, and an end. But keep going. Add more lines, creating the nine-box option with a beginning that leads to a problem, rising action, a climax, and a solution. The number of boxes is completely arbitrary. That was nine boxes, but you could have 12 or 1

Wondering what this means? An adapted book is a book that has been modified (or adapted!) in some way. This might mean that the book includes simpler text, additional picture symbols, braille, or some tactile elements. In most cases, these additions are meant to make a book easier for a child to access and use.
Engage Students Remember, the goal of using multiple texts is to promote literacy development in general terms as well as discipline specific ones and increase critical thinking skills. These goals make it necessary to gradually release this responsibility to students.
